What Is Backflow and Why Is Backflow Testing Important?
Understanding Backflow
Backflow occurs when water flows in the opposite direction through your plumbing system due to changes in water pressure. When this happens, contaminated water from irrigation systems, fire suppression systems, boilers, chemical processing equipment, or other sources can enter the public drinking water supply.
Because of these risks, municipalities require certain properties to install approved backflow prevention devices that stop contaminated water from flowing backward into clean water lines.
Why Annual Backflow Testing Is Required
Installing a backflow preventer is only the first step. Like any mechanical device, backflow assemblies experience normal wear over time. Annual backflow testing verifies that valves, seals, and internal components continue functioning properly and will protect your water supply when needed.
Routine testing also helps:
- Maintain compliance with local water authorities
- Protect public health
- Prevent costly violations
- Identify small problems before they become expensive repairs
- Keep certification records current
Commercial Backflow Testing Services
Commercial facilities often have complex plumbing systems that require experienced testing professionals. WxFx works with businesses across New Jersey to provide reliable annual testing, inspections, certification, and repairs while minimizing downtime.
Our technicians understand commercial compliance requirements and work around your schedule to keep operations running smoothly.
Residential Backflow Testing & Certification
Homeowners are increasingly required by local water authorities to maintain certified backflow prevention devices, particularly for irrigation systems, lawn sprinklers, pools, wells, and other cross-connections.
WxFx makes residential backflow testing simple. Our licensed technicians perform thorough inspections, complete required testing, provide certification, and explain the results in clear, easy-to-understand language.
We help homeowners maintain compliance while protecting their family’s drinking water.
Fire System & Irrigation Backflow Testing
- Fire Protection System Testing: Fire sprinkler systems require specialized backflow prevention devices to protect the public water supply. Our technicians perform certified testing on fire protection backflow assemblies while coordinating with your property’s maintenance requirements.
- Irrigation Backflow Testing: Landscape irrigation systems create one of the most common cross-connections found on residential and commercial properties. We inspect and certify irrigation backflow preventers to ensure fertilizers, pesticides, and stagnant water cannot contaminate your potable water supply.
Comprehensive Backflow Inspection
Every appointment begins with a detailed inspection of your backflow prevention assembly. Our technicians examine the device for visible damage, leaks, corrosion, accessibility, and installation issues before performing certified performance testing.
Certified Performance Testing
Using industry-approved calibrated equipment, we perform pressure testing to verify that your backflow prevention assembly meets all required performance standards.
Our backflow testing covers:
Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) Assemblies
Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA)
Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB)
Spill Resistant Vacuum Breakers
Other approved backflow prevention devices
Certification & Documentation
After testing is complete, we provide the required certification documentation and submit reports when required by your municipality or water authority, helping you stay compliant without unnecessary paperwork.

FAQs: Backflow Testing & Inspection
How often does a backflow preventer need to be tested?
Most municipalities require backflow prevention devices to be tested once every year by a certified backflow tester. However, some properties may have additional requirements depending on the type of facility or local water authority. WxFx helps customers stay on schedule with timely testing and certification services to avoid missed compliance deadlines.
What happens if my backflow device fails testing?
A failed backflow test means the device is not providing the protection required to prevent contaminated water from entering the public water supply. If this occurs, our technicians will explain the cause of the failure, recommend the appropriate repairs or replacement, and perform the necessary work to restore your system to compliance as quickly as possible.
What's the difference between a backflow inspection and backflow testing?
A backflow inspection includes a visual evaluation of the device, surrounding plumbing, and installation to identify any visible issues or code concerns. Backflow testing goes a step further by using specialized equipment to measure the internal performance of the assembly and verify that it is functioning correctly. At WxFx, every certified test includes a thorough inspection to ensure your device is operating safely and efficiently.
Who needs backflow testing?
Backflow testing is commonly required for commercial buildings, apartment complexes, schools, healthcare facilities, manufacturing plants, irrigation systems, fire sprinkler systems, restaurants, and many residential properties equipped with irrigation systems or other cross-connections. If your local water authority has notified you that your property requires testing, WxFx can perform the inspection, certification, and any necessary repairs.
